Dating all the way back to the original Colonies in 1684, the area now known as Upper Dublin Township has history that spans the birth of our nation. In 1698, a local man named Edward Tanner was issued a land grant from William Penn for the area, which he named Upper and Lower Dublin. In preceding years, the portion referred to as Lower Dublin was absorbed into the City of Philadelphia and Upper Dublin Township was officially established in 1701. In 1946, Upper Dublin Township claimed the status of First Class Township in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a title which the township still holds today. A notable historical event that took place in the area was in 1777 when George Washington set up his headquarters at the Emlen House during the Whitemarsh Encampment.
