Keeping your home on the market over the holidays can be a tough call. Some experts think that it is not worth it because sellers will seem desperate. Plus, may agents go out of town over the holidays and it can be difficult to be ready for showings at a moment’s notice during the holiday season. One major advantage of selling your home over the holidays is that it is generally looking its absolute best with beautiful decorations.
If you decide to keep your home on the market over the holidays, there are a few things to keep in mind. Keep decorations to a minimum. Be especially careful not to cover up selling points such as mantels or stained glass windows. Use pine cones, or evergreen garlands instead of large artificial displays and banners. Allow viewers to envision their own furniture and holiday decorations in the space. If you would like to add holiday appeal to viewers, leave some cookies on the counter or some hot cider on the stove. Think of what you would expect in viewing a home at this time of year, and give your home the best shot to be sold.
On a personal note, I had my home listed over the holidays. What I found was buyers were more serious because no one has time to “kick tires” during this exceptionally busy time. I did put up a tree I just cut back on other decorations so I didn’t overwhelm the house.
